EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Japan is significantly behind the rest of the world on AI search readiness

As of 2026, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and other AI platforms can generate highly accurate answers in Japanese, and Japanese users have rapidly started using AI questions in place of traditional search.

Most Japanese businesses have been slow to respond: only 14% have any LLMO (LLM optimization) strategy at all, well behind the US (41%) and EU (29%).

The average LLMO Score for Japanese brands is 38/100, against a 61/100 global average. E-commerce shows the widest gap of any sector — 22% vs. a 73% global average — leaving a genuine blue-ocean opportunity for whichever brands move first.

This report is based on real-time API data collected by Visovra to analyze the state of AI search in the Japanese market.
